A L Syed's 1930s view of Hornby Road, now Dadabhai Naoroji Road, Bombay,, Mumbai.

One unknown fact is that the British restricted entry to Indians in this area for security purposes(due to fear after 1857 Indian rebellion).

ONLY ESSENTIAL LOCALS WERE ALLOWED, SUCH AS, FOR HARBOUR AND SWEEPERS, that is why the streets look empty like western countries.

AS MOST INDIANS UNDER BRITISH RULE WERE IN PENURY -CARS BELONGED TO MAINY WHITES AND RICH INDIAN MAHA RAJAS ,A FEW BELONGED  TO GOVERNMENT OFFICERS

BRITISH HAD A GREAT FEAR OF A REPEAT OF 1857 REBELLION -THEY RESTRICTED CAR SALES TO GENERAL INDIAN PUBLIC WHO WERE FORCED TO USE BULLOCK CARTS
