British Era Schools In Bombay – 3 Postcards 1900

British Era Schools In Bombay - 3 Postcards 1900

Three postcards from 1900 to 1920s show British-era schools in Bombay (Mumbai). The first postcard shows what looks like two Parsi girls on their way to school with their ayah and probably a male servant at the back carrying their lunch. Not sure which school they are off to. The Parsis had quite a few schools of their own, to mention two of them were the J B Vachha, and Alexandra.

The second postcard shows girl students of St Joseph’s Convent School at Bandra. Founded by the Daughters of the Cross in 1833. Later moving to Bandra from Byculla in 1864. The third image is that of St Xavier’s High School probably at Bombay Fort. St Xavier’s was established in 1869 by the Jesuits in the neo-gothic building it occupies to this day.

Did you know – the schools in the colonial era gave importance to character building and not just focus on education.
