View Of Bombay or Mumbai – Old Print 1845
This is another beautiful steel engraving titled Bombay dating to around 1845. The text under the image reads “Aus der Kunstanst des Bibl. Inst. in Hildburghausen” (From the art institute of the Bibl. Inst. In Hildburghausen) and “Eigenthum der Verleger” (Property of the publisher). It measures 9 x 6 inches. The view is from Mazagaon hill.
Bombay or Mumbai undoubtedly is an engineering marvel. Reclaimed into a single landmass from the seven islands. It was completed in the mid-1800s taking two and a half centuries to finish the work. By 1853 the first Indian historic railway journey took place from Mumbai to Thane. Mumbai had 8 lakh, people, by 1864, since then the city is still growing in population and development.
