Old 1914 postcard displaying the Marshall Steam Road Roller owned by the Bombay Municipality. Steam road rollers played a critical part in the construction or repair of roads in the past. Appearing in the scene probably in the mid-19th century. As internal combustion engines improved, petrol and diesel replaced the steam road rollers gradually.
This is a Marshall Sons & Co, England, steamroad roller. That was used by the Bombay Municipality for the work in the city. Here it is probably being used for the roadwork on the Queens Road bordering the Oval Maidan. Since the Rajabai Clock Tower can be seen in the background.
