Youth robbed of Rs 4 lakh gold near CST

MUMBAI: A 22-year-old employee of a jewellery shop in Kalbadevi has claimed that he was robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh outside JJ School of Arts opposite CST on Tuesday night. The Azad Maidan police have registered a case of robbery.

According to the police, around 9pm on Tuesday, Jaswantsingh Sarangavat was heading towards CST with a bag containing gold ornaments to be delivered to a client. He was near JJ school when two persons pushed him from behind and took away the bag. He told the police that he didn't remember how the bag disappeared from his hands. Sarangavat than lodged a complaint with the cops. However, the police have found it hard to believe that somebody would dare to snatch a bag on a crowded stretch near CST at 9pm.

22-year-old claims 5 men raped her in station subway

MUMBAI: A 22-year-old woman has claimed that she was gangraped in a deserted subway at Churchgate railway station early on Sunday by five men who also forced her to down a drink. The victim, who suffers from stunted growth, is recuperating at the Bhabha Hospital.

A complaint was filed on Tuesday and the GRP is awaiting her medical reports.

The victim's statement puzzled investigators as the station subway is shut every night. It was supposed to be closed when the gangrape is alleged to have occurred. The CCTV footage did not show the woman near the subway early on Sunday, Monday and even Tuesday.

The victim lives with her parents and younger brother in a chawl in Kandivli. She had walked out of home after a fight with her parents on Friday.

On Tuesday, a female commuter noticed the victim looking weak and unwell in a Down local around 10 am. On inquiry, the victim said she had been gangraped. The commuter informed a friend who runs an NGO for children and took her to the hospital.

The victim said she was seated on the staircase at the entrance of the subway at 2 am on Sunday when the accused forced her to drink alcohol and raped her near some bushes.

Bhabha doctors said the medical exam had failed to establish much about the crime. There were no signs of injury on her body or private parts.

"Forensic samples have been collected," Dr P Jadhav said. "She's stable. She'll be under observation for a few days."

GRP officials said the victim suffered from asthma and tuberculosis and her haemoglobin count was low.

"There are some loose ends in her statement and we are trying to ascertain what exactly happened," DCP Deepak Devraj, WR, GRP, said.

Officials are considering the possibility of the incident having occurred at a location other than the subway. "We will be recording statements of guards who man the subway, besides those who operate a public lavatory nearby," a GRP officer said.

Mumbai firms split over shifting to Surat

SURAT: There is division in the Indian diamond industry after big diamond companies in Mumbai, mainly owned by Saurashtrian Patels, decided to 'migrate' to Surat.

At least 50 big diamond companies had agreed unanimously to migrate to Surat at a meeting held in Mumbai four days ago. However, a message on social media is urging the diamond community to do a rethink on its decision.

The message says, "We are talking about Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) when we already have Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) in Mumbai. The BDB has more than 5,000 offices. Why we need factories and offices at the same place (Surat)?"

The anti-migration crusaders in Mumbai highlight non-availability of international air connectivity in Surat. They also say there are no auction houses, diamond mining companies' offices and gemological institutes in the Diamond City.

The message states, "We already have invested crores of rupees in offices and residences. We already have infrastructure in Mumbai. If we have any complaints against infrastructure, have we approached the state government of Maharashtra? If we are banking on Narendra Modi government at the centre for better facilities, we can still do that if and when he comes to power. However, there is no need to shift our offices to Surat."

Industry sources said the diamond business in the country, which was once ruled by Palanpuri Jains, is now in the hands of Saurashtrian Patels. If the 10 big companies owned by Saurashtrian Patels have decided to shift their operations from Mumbai to Surat, then it is going to be a big blow to those wanting to stay in Mumbai.

"When the big companies shifted from Opera House to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the medium-sized companies followed suit. Now, if again the big companies shift their base from BKC to Surat, the rest will follow," said Surat Diamond Association president Dinesh Navadia.

A DTC sightholder holder and a Saurashtrian Patel said, "The migration movement is not new. It is going on for the past one-and-a-half-decade. Surat was always our first preference and not Mumbai."
