The bund, or dam, across the river was completed in 1853 by Captain Studdert R.E in order to provide water for the poorer citizens of the city. It was financed by the Parsi philanthropist, Sir Jamsetji Jeejeebhoy (1783-1859) after whom it was named. The bridge and garden were designed by Colonel Sellon
