Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Celebration Bombay, 1897 Print

An 1897 print of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration in Bombay (now Mumbai). Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert died in 1861, in his memory a statue in pure white marble was erected at the Victoria Gardens in 1872. The statue of Queen Victoria seated under a Gothic styled canopy was prepared for installation.

This was a companion statue and was likewise installed side by side of Prince Albert’s statue at Victoria Gardens. Both were purportedly gifts from the Maharaja of Baroda to the city of Bombay. Because of Queen Victoria’s statue’s attractive appearance, it was decided to place it near the junction of the Esplanade (P. D’Mello Marg) and Mayo Road (now Bhaurao Patil Marg). Where the public could enjoy its beauty.

Shown in this picture is the very statue of the Queen being glorified by a crowd on her diamond jubilee day in 1897. The text at the bottom indicates that not a single European was present at the function. Born in 1819, Victoria was bequeathed with the title Empress of India in 1876, she died in 1901. Her son Edward VII succeeded the throne.
