CAMA HOSPITAL BOMBAY THROUGH THE AGES

   



The foundation stone of (now known as the Cama & Albless Hospital) was laid on November 22, 1883, by H.R.H.  the Duke of Connaught.

Key details regarding its establishment include:

  • Inauguration: The hospital was formally opened on July 30, 1886

  • Founder: It was established following a generous donation of ₹100,000 (~₹43 crore in 2020 value) by Parsi philanthropist Pestonjee Hormusjee Cama

  • Architecture: The building was designed in a Medieval Gothic style by architect Khan Bahadoor Muncherjee Cowasjee Murzban using stone from Porbander. 

  • Purpose: It was founded as the first dedicated facility for women and children in Mumbai, addressing the need for specialized maternal and pediatric care in colonial Bombay.
