Photograph taken between 1885 and 1888 by E Taurines of Victoria Dock construction work in Bombay City . The idea for the construction of a wet docks for the use of shipping in Bombay harbour was first put forward in 1855, but work did not begin until 1875. It was hoped that the new dock would create a prosperous revolution in the trade of Bombay. The Prince's Dock finally opened to traffic on 1 January 1880. In 1884, a scheme for a dock extension, to be called Victoria Dock, put before the Government was approved.
