Photograph of a royal palanquin in Savantvadi, Maharashtra, taken by an unknown photographer in 1877, part of the Bellew Collection of Architectural Views. The princely state of Savantvadi had been founded by the Bhonsle family, originally from Goa, in about 1627. It lies in the Konkan region between Goa and Bombay. Now a thriving market town, Savantvadi is known as a centre of arts and crafts, particularly for woodwork and painting by families of hereditary painters called chitaris. In the 1870s, it was ruled by the young Rajabahadur Raghunath Savant Bhonsle (r.1869-99). The photo shows an opulent and beautifully embellished state palanquin.
