'Probe green damage by jetty in creek'
MUMBAI:
The Bombay high court has asked National Environmental Engineering
Research Institute (NEERI) to collect soil samples and get satellite images of a jetty at a creek in Sindhudurg district, a few kilometres from the Goa border.
The court issued its directive when hearing a public interest litigation last week filed by an ex-MLC,Parshuram Uparkar, challenging the Maharashtra Maritime Board's decision to allot wharfs to a private company to set up the jetty.
"The NEERI will conduct studies to determine if the jetties existed before 2010," said the petitioner's advocate K K Tiwari. "It has also sought time to carry out water and soil tests to check for environmental damage."
