Aadhaar AS POLICE MAN AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY

▪In Thane, Maharashtra, a woman has been arrested for running a honey trap racket through which she extorted crores of rupees from senior police officers and government officials by threatening them with false rape charges.
▪The woman had previously been arrested in 2016 for attempting to extort money while impersonating a crime branch officer in Thane. However, after being released from jail, she resumed her fraudulent activities.
▪This case came to light when two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) from Thane filed complaints against the woman, stating she demanded ₹40 lakh each while threatening to register false rape cases if they did not comply.
▪According to police investigations, the accused employed a deceptive modus operandi. She would pose as a distressed former policewoman, home guard, or widow seeking help, thereby emotionally manipulating and luring high-ranking officials into communication.
▪Once initial trust was built through WhatsApp chats, video calls, and in-person meetings, the accused would secretly record compromising photos and videos using screen recording software or hidden cameras, without the knowledge of victims. These recordings were later used as tools for blackmail.
▪The woman’s operation extended across various cities in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Thane. Victims included 3 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), multiple excise officers, assistant commissioners, and senior inspectors.
▪Although her bail application was initially denied by a lower court, she secured temporary relief from the Bombay High Court.
▪Authorities are continuing the investigation, expecting more victims to step forward as many officers reportedly stayed silent due to fear of reputational damage and job loss.
