BB & CI Railway Office At Churchgate Bombay – 2 PCs 1915

Two old photo postcards (1915 & 1955) of the BB & CI Railway Office at Station in Bombay (Mumbai). It is now the Western India Railway office. Formerly the Bombay, Baroda, and Central Indian Railway (B.B & C.I.) during the colonial era. The design of the building was the work of architect F W Stevens, assisted by his son, Charles.

Stevens had designed the Victoria Terminus building previously. Although this heritage building is not as ornate or elaborate as Stevens’s other works the Victoria Terminus or the Municipal Corporation Buildings. The BB & CI is of Gothic style with Indian features, such as the onion-shaped domes and the minarets. The work on the building began in 1894 and completed in 1899. The BB & CI head office was originally located at Surat, later shifting to this newly completed Gothic building at Churchgate in Bombay.
