Esplanade & Hornby Roads Bombay – 10 Old Postcards
A collection of 10 old photo postcards showing Esplanade & Hornby Roads in Bombay (Mumbai). The postcards date from around 1900 to the 1920s. Gives a rare and diverse glimpse of the business district of Bombay in the British era period. Esplanade Road is now known as Mahatma Gandhi Road, and Hornby Road is now Dadabhai Naoroji Road. Both meet at the intersection of Flora Fountain or Hutatma Chowk.
The nearby landmarks are the Bombay High Court, University, Rajabai Clock Tower, Oriental Building, etc. The Horniman Circle, Harbour, Prince of Wales Museum, Churchgate Station, Victoria Terminus, etc are not very far off. In fact, all are in close proximity to the intersection of Esplanade & Hornby Road or Flora Fountain. Some of the postcards show the once omnipresent trams of Bombay, one of them shows a horse-drawn tram. Some cards have interesting inscriptions on them written by the sender. One reads “I have walked along this road.” The other reads “One or two more photographs for the collection.” Click on the photo for better view.
