Salsette or Mumbai Suburban – Vintage Map 1893
A vintage 1893 map of Salsette, now Mumbai Suburban district. The key locations are- Salsette, Bandora or Bandra, Tannah or Thane, Kourla or Kurla, Trombay, Mahim, Coulaba or Colaba. Bombay or Mumbai was a cluster of seven islands in the sea- Bombay isle, Colaba, little Colaba, Mahim, Parel, Worli & Mazagaon.
The British through years of reclamations turned the seven islands into a single landmass. Joined by the island of Salsette in the north. Truly an engineering marvel of its time. Visible in this 1893 map that the reclamation of Mumbai was not fully completed at the time.
Interestingly, some places like Mulund, Ghatkopar, and other places were either partially submerged, or unpopulated, or did not exist at all. Notice two black railway lines on this map, those were the B.B & C.I (Western Railway) and the G.I.P Railways (Central Railway).
