On December 2, 1911, King George V and Queen Mary made history by becoming the first British monarchs to visit India. They arrived in Bombay (now Mumbai) at Apollo Bunder, marking a significant moment in India’s colonial past.

To commemorate this royal visit, the Gateway of India was later constructed at the same site. The foundation stone was laid in 1913, and the monument was completed in 1924. Over time, the Gateway of India has transformed from a symbol of the British Empire into one of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks and a silent witness to key moments in India’s history.
