BOMBAY FORT&HARBOR VIEW FROM BELMONT

 

The View from Belmont depicting Bombay Fort and Harbour was published in 1800 as Plate 8 in the volume Twelve Views of the Island of Bombay and its Vicinity. 

Key Details

  • Artist: James Wales (1747–1795). 

  • Publication: Printed by R. Cribb in London, accompanying the 1800 letterpress volume titled Bombay Views. 

  • Subject: The plate specifically shows the view from Belmont (Mazagaon) looking to the south, featuring the flagstaff at Bombay Fort, the dockyard, and ships moored in the harbour with the Mahratta mountains in the background. 

  • Commission: The series was originally painted for Sir Charles Malet, the British Resident of Poona, after Wales met him in Bombay in 1791.
