The Bombay Club — Overview & Details
Year Established: Founded around 1845 by members of the Indian Navy.
Location: Situated in the Fort area along Rampart Row West (historically also known as Ropewalk Lane/Street), close to the harbor and dockyards.
Historical Details
Origins & Significance: It was one of old Bombay's premier and most exclusive historical gentlemen's clubs. In its 19th-century heyday, it served as a prominent social hub for elite British officers, civil servants, and merchants.
The Building & Postcard View: The vintage postcard view shows the long, multi-arched classical structure along the esplanade/streetscape, featuring its characteristic uniform colonnaded verandahs and balconies typical of colonial Fort architecture.
Later Years: The club maintained a strict "Europeans-only" membership policy well into the 20th century. It eventually closed down in 1958, after which its furniture and remaining effects were accommodated by the Royal Bombay Yacht Club.
