'The Travels of Sir John Mandeville' ('Le Livre Des Merveilles') was a manuscript written between 1357-1371, allegedly the travelogue of a fantastical Englishman named Sir John Mandeville and his journeys across the Near East to as far as India and China. A painting of the East Indiaman ‘Inglis’, shown off South Foreland, near Dover, in broadside view. She sailed on her first voyage to India in 1813 and made at least nine more thereafter until 1830. The ‘Inglis’ was built in 1812 at Paul's Yard near Hull. She was mounted with 26 guns and had a complement of 130 men at full strength. Thus, one can speak of a Danish, Dutch, English, French, Portuguese or Swedish East Indiaman. John Harrison (1693– 1776) was a self-educated English carpenter and clockmaker. He invented the marine chronometer, a long-sought after device for solving the problem of establishing the East-West position or longitude of a ship at sea, thus revolutionising and extending the possibility of safe long-distance sea travel in the Age of Sail. The problem was considered so important, that the British Parliament offered financial rewards of up to £20,000 (£2.75 million) under the 1714 Longitude Act. Stock Photo

China: 'The East Indiaman 'Asia''. Oil on canvas painting by William John Huggins (1781-1845), 1826. The 'Asia' was built in 1811 and is depicted off Hong Kong between 1831 and 1832. Huggins has painted her in starboard broadside, flying the red ensign and distinguishing flags. Chinese junks are shown left and right of her, with more European ships in the distance depicted in front of what may be 'Lintin' (Nei Lingding) Island. The subject of Indiamen in the East was a popular one with Huggins who began his working life at sea and served in the East India Company as a steward and assistant. Stock Photo

Huangpu, formerly transcribed as Whampoa, is one of the ten districts in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. Huangpu was the dock area and waterfront for many European cargo vessels trading with China in the 18th century, such as those associated with the Maritime Fur Trade and Old China Trade. The 'Kent' was an East Indiaman, a vessel sailing for the British East India Company, and launched in 1820. She completed two voyages to Bombay and China for the Company and was on her third voyage, to Bengal and China, when she was lost at sea in the Bay of Biscay due to a fire. The 1778 arrival of British explorer James Cook was Hawaii’s first documented contact with European explorers. Cook named the islands the 'Sandwich Islands' in honor of his sponsor John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. He published the islands' location and reported the native name as Owyhee. William John Huggins (1781 - 19 May 1845) was a British marine painter who spent time as an ordinary seaman, making one voyage to India and China betwen December 1812 and August 1814 on an East Indiaman. He drew various ships and landscapes during his voyage, and eventually became a professional artist after settling in London, working for the East India Company. It explored what is now called the Ross Sea and discovered the Ross Ice Shelf. The Bedford Master was an manuscript illuminator active in Paris during the fifteenth century. He is named for the work he did on two books illustrated for John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford between 1415 and 1435. One is the Bedford Hours, a Book of Hours, in the British Library. Amagiri was the 15th of 24 Fubuki-class destroyers, built for the Imperial Japanese Navy following World War I. When introduced into service, these ships were the most powerful destroyers in the world. They served as first-line destroyers through the 1930s, and remained formidable weapons systems well into the Pacific War. She is most famous for ramming the PT-109 commanded by Lieutenant John F.
