The 1946 Naval Uprising, also known as the Royal Indian Navy mutiny, was a failed insurrection against the British government in India. The mutiny began on February 18, 1946 in HMIS Talwar in Mumbai. The mutiny began with sailors protesting poor food and racial slurs from commanding officer Arthur Frederick King. The sailors deflated King's car tires and inscribed "Quit India" on the bonnet.
The mutiny spread to 78 ships and 21 naval establishments, and included nearly 20,000 ratings. The movement drew support from Hindus, Muslims, and Parsis of all ages and economic backgrounds.
On the third day of the mutiny, Admiral JH Godfrey broadcast on All India Radio to say that the British would use all the force available at their command. In five days, the mutiny delivered a mortal blow to the entire structure of the British Raj.
